Real Madrid have called for Tottenham Hotspur to return the favour the Spanish side did for the English club with the transfer of Rafael van der Vaart, according to Marca.

The 29-year-old landed at White Hart Lane from Real Madrid in 2010 for a knockdown fee of just €9M – and this despite larger offers from other clubs being on the table.

Los Blancos’ good relationship with Tottenham, combined with Van der Vaart’s desire to join then-manager Harry Redknapp in London, saw the deal sealed.

Now Jose Mourinho’s men believe Spurs should remember the events of two years ago as they bid to sign Luka Modric from the Premier League giants.

Real Madrid have already agreed personal terms with Modric and the difference between the amount the Spanish club have offered and the figure Spurs want is now small.

But the English club are holding firm and signalling their intent to let the transfer drag on throughout the summer in order to extract the maximum possible fee from the Spanish champions. For Real Madrid, remembering Van der Vaart’s transfer, this is not good for relations between the clubs.

Meanwhile Modric has done his bit in an attempt to force through the transfer by skipping Spurs’ pre-season tour of the United States.

It is a move which could see disciplinary action taken against him.
