Holland number 1 Maarten Stekelenburg still has work to do to convince new Giallorossi boss Zdenek Zeman that he should be the club’s first choice, sources in Italy have indicated.

Stekelenburg will be with the Roma squad on their pre-season tour of North America and has the opportunity to impress Zeman.

The 65-year-old coach is believed to hold an interest in Inter shot-stopper Julio Cesar, who could well leave the Nerazzurri this summer following their signing of Samir Handanovic from Udinese.

But Roma thumped Zaglebie Lubin 4-0 yesterday, a game which saw Stekelenburg keep a clean sheet.

The goalkeeper only joined the Giallorossi last summer and is Holland’s undisputed first choice between the sticks.

Stekelenburg has spoken positively about his time in Serie A so far, believing it has improved him as a player. He is unlikely to want a quick exit from the Italian capital.
