Wigan Athletic have officially announced the signing of Spanish defender Ivan Ramis from Real Mallorca for an undisclosed fee.

The player has penned a three-year contract which will keep the 27-year-old at the club until August 2015.

The Latics defender was very close to signing for newly promoted West Ham a couple of days ago and the London club even had a transfer bid accepted for the Spanish centre-back.

However, the player was keener to work with a Spanish manager and thus, opted to say ‘no’ to West Ham in favour of Roberto Martinez’s side.

The defender started his career at Mallorca after emerging through the youth ranks of Vermilions in 2004. He spent a season on loan at Real Valladolid before returning to the club in 2006 to cement a first-team place in the side.

He represented the Spanish outfit 164 times in his eight years at the club and scored nine goals during his stay. The defender was instrumental in the club’s surge to eighth position in La Liga last season appearing 34 times in all competitions.

Ramis may make his debut in a Wigan shirt this Sunday at the D.W. Stadium in a friendly against his ex-team Mallorca.
