Benfica’s Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel is close to signing for Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to Portuguese daily A Bola, with the possibility existing that Fabio Coentrao may go the other way on a season-long loan.

The Belgian ace has been linked with a variety of clubs this summer including the likes of Premier League giants Manchester United, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, Serie A juggernauts AC Milan and Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala.

However, it seems that Jose Mourinho’s men have taken pole position in the race for the midfielder.

According to A Bola, a transfer fee has been agreed between Los Blancos and Benfica and the deal will be finalised after Real Madrid return from their pre-season tour of the United States.

It has also been suggested that Coentrao, who joined the Spanish champions just last summer from the Portuguese outfit may be a part of the deal, and he could go out on loan to his former club for a year.
