Werder Bremen fans are outraged by the club’s negotiations with chicken farmers Wiesenhof over becoming the side’s new shirt sponsors.

Fans have accused Wiesenhof of animal cruelty and a campaign has exploded on Facebook demanding that Werder do not pen an agreement with the company.

Wiesenhof slaughter approximately 4.5 million chickens every single week and has attracted criticism and allegations of animal welfare violations.

A Wiesenhof factory was forced to temporarily close in March because of hygiene concerns.

The company were willing to pay between €5M and €8M per season to have their logo carried on Werder’s shirts.

The Bundesliga club’s marketing manager Klaus Filbry insists that nothing has yet been signed with Wiesenhof.

"Nothing has yet been signed", said Filbry.

"We’re closely monitoring the protests."
