Zenit St. Petersburg coach Luciano Spalletti admits that the Russian champions have asked Barcelona about Ibrahim Afellay’s availability as they try to sign the Dutchman.

Spalletti’s side have been quiet in the summer transfer market so far, despite the club hoping to make a real impact in this season’s Champions League.

Several big names have been linked with joining Zenit, but nothing of genuine note has materialised.

It is not for the lack of trying however, Spalletti has insisted.

"We are not negotiating only for one player, but for four", said the Italian.

"You want to hear a name? Afellay", he added, when pressed on who the club’s targets are.

"There has not yet been a concrete offer for the player, but just talks over Barcelona’s asking price, because if the club do not want to lose the player, it makes no sense to make him a proposal."
