Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel has admitted that it is unlikely John Guidetti will be returning to the club to reprise his successful loan spell of last season.

The Manchester City striker enjoyed a fruitful campaign at De Kuip, making a big splash in the Eredivisie and scoring 20 goals in 23 Dutch top flight games.

Feyenoord’s fans were desperate for Guidetti to stay and Van Geel had held out the possibility that the Sweden international could return.

But now that is looking a forlorn hope and Van Geel has admitted that it is not likely.

"At the last moment anything can happen, but we are not assuming that the return of John is realistic", Van Geel told Voetbal International.

"We do not know what City want and besides, he needs time to recover from his injury [Guidetti picked up an injury which ruled him out of Euro 2012, ed.]."

Van Geel did insist though that the Rotterdam giants can afford to strengthen up front.

"We have room in our budget for a good striker who is value."
