Why Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur & Middlesbrough Form the Perfect Weekend Treble

We all like to dabble in a little football betting from time to time, and this weekend offers some interesting matches to get stuck into. I have been casting my eyes over the English football fixture list, and have come up with a treble that may prove profitable, as well as a few other outsiders who might spring a surprise. Whether you choose to follow or not, these are my tips for this weekend’s matches:

Premier League – Norwich City to win at home to Queens Park Rangers (2.38)

Both these sides were on the wrong end of a 5-0 spanking last weekend, and the winner of this match will undoubtedly be the team which manages to apply enough ointment to the scars in the quickest possible time. Starting the season with such a disastrous performance often takes away any pre-season optimism, but I suspect it will be the Canaries who recover first. They were excellent at Carrow Road last season, and I expect that to continue this time around. For QPR, I think it will be a little while before the ship is steadied.

Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur to win at home to West Bromwich Albion (1.53)

Tottenham haven’t had a great summer, losing their manager in strange circumstances and seeing Luka Modric head to Real Madrid. They put in a good performance last week at Newcastle, and I expect them to do the same on Saturday. The purchase of Emmanuel Adebayor will bring some confidence to the club, although it should be pointed out he can blow hot and cold at times. As for West Brom, a superb 3-0 thumping of Liverpool last week has served notice that manager Steve Clarke knows what he’s doing. I think they’ll put up a good show against Spurs, but I can still see the home side prevailing.

Championship – Middlesbrough to win at home to Crystal Palace (1.80)

Last season Crystal Palace performed minor miracles to stay away from the relegation bun-fight, but two defeats out of two, including a humiliating 4-1 loss to Bristol City in midweek, will worry even the most optimistic of Eagles fans. Middlesbrough are always a tough prospect at the Riverside, and their hard-fought 3-2 win against Burnley on Tuesday will have given them a lot of confidence. I expect this match to be a relatively easy three points for the home side.

The Treble:

Norwich City (2.38)

Tottenham Hotspur (1.53)
Middlesbrough (1.80)

Total return for £5 stake = £32.77

In addition to this treble, there are several other interesting bets in this weekend’s fixture list:

Premier League – Robin Van Persie to score for Manchester United against Fulham (1.70)

Whether you think Van Persie’s recent switch to Old Trafford was motivated by trophies or wages, there’s no denying that he knows where the goal is. Time will tell if the Dutchman can strike up a successful partnership with Wayne Rooney, of course, but there are some who feel he won’t get the same number of chances he enjoyed during Arsenal matches. United’s disappointing defeat at Everton on Monday may well persuade Sir Alex to give Van Persie a start against Fulham, and if that happens I can see him opening his account.

League One – Both teams to score in the Carlisle United v Portsmouth match (1.80)

Amid all the talk of strikers costing £20-odd million and enjoying wages we normally associate with the greediest members of the banking industry, it’s more appropriate than ever to spare a though for clubs at the other end of the scale. Portsmouth are struggling for their very survival, and long trips to the likes of Carlisle will not be welcomed by the club’s money men. This match could prove to be an entertaining one for the purists, however, because both sides are capable of scoring and are even more capable of letting their opposition find the net as well.

Championship – Peterborough United to draw at home to Leeds United (3.60)

Both sides were on the receiving end of 2-1 defeats in midweek, and this match could be a close-run thing. Leeds managed to beat Wolves on day one but a defeat at Blackpool on Tuesday wasn’t in their script. A trip to Peterborough isn’t always an easy prospect, and the home side will do all they can to make life difficult for a club that are still considered to be one of the biggest in the country, despite their recent difficulties. I think this will be a close one, and I can’t see either side taking the three points.
