We all like to dabble in a little football betting from time to time, and this weekend offers some interesting matches to get stuck into. I have been casting my eyes over the English and international football fixture list, and have come up with a treble that may prove profitable, as well as a few other outsiders who might spring a surprise. Whether you choose to follow or not, these are my tips for this weekend’s matches:
League One – Swindon Town to win at home to Leyton Orient (1.53)
Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio has forgiven goalkeeper for his Di Canio-like reaction to being substituted in last week’s defeat at Preston, but whether his sorry is enough to get him back in the starting line-up remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though, you can expect Swindon to respond to the 4-1 defeat in a positive manner, and that’s why I think Leyton Orient will be on the end of a heavy defeat on Saturday. The London side have zero points from three league games so far, and I expect them to still have this perfectly round figure by the end of this match.

League One – Yeovil Town to win at home to Bournemouth (2.50)
Gary Johnson’s side have made a highly impressive start to the season, acquiring ten points from their first four games, and they will be looking for three more from Bournemouth on Saturday. The away side have lost just one of their four matches, but have only managed to draw the other three. When the home team is winning, Huish Park can be something of a fortress, and if the Somerset side manage an early goal the Cherries will find it difficult to get back on level terms.

League Two – Oxford United to win at home to Exeter City (2.05)
Oxford are one of the early favourites to take the League Two title this season, and they have certainly begun the campaign like contenders. Although they lost at York last week, their previous three victories have shown what they are capable of achieving. Exeter have also had a trio of wins, and are equal with Oxford on nine points, so this will be a close match. I expect the home side to take the points, however, and to gradually pull away from the likes of Exeter as the season continues.

The Treble:
Swindon Town (1.53))
Yeovil Town (2.50)
Oxford United (2.05)
Total return for £5 stake = £39.20
In addition to this treble, there are several other interesting bets in this weekend’s fixture list:
World Cup Qualifier – Scotland to draw at home to Serbia (3.00)
After a protracted period of under-achievement, Scotland’s football team could perhaps be emerging into a more optimistic era. Whisper it quietly, but there are many members of the Tartan Army who feel they have a genuine chance of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. A tough group that includes Belgium, Croatia and Macedonia, (as well as Wales) won’t be easy, but at Hampden Park they are capable of beating anyone. Serbia are no mugs, though, and I think this game will end in a point each for these two sides.

League Two – Bristol Rovers to draw at home to Aldershot (3.40)
One of the beauties of early season football is that matches are difficult to predict purely because teams are often so inconsistent. However, both Bristol Rovers and Aldershot are expected to struggle this time around, and so far their results have suggested this is going to be a long nine months for both clubs. Without a league win between them so far, it seems logical to assume this will be a stalemate.

World Cup Qualifier – Jermain Defoe to score for England against Moldova (1.95)
England’s opening match in the 2014 qualifying competition sees them facing Moldova away from home. Although it’s a difficult fixture, Roy Hodgson will be hoping to start with a win. In the absence of Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney, there will be a different look to the front line, and although it’s not easy to second guess the boss, I think Jermain Defoe will feature at some point. The Tottenham striker always knows where the goal is, and that’s why I think he’ll find the net on Friday, even if he only comes on as a substitute.
