Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has insisted that the Blaugrana would continue to play in the Spanish top flight even if the region of Catalonia gained independence from Spain.

Support is growing for independence in the region, with the latest polls showing a slight majority want to break away from Spain.

And on Tuesday, over one and a half million people took to the streets to call for independence.

Were Catalonia to split from Spain there would be a question mark over Barcelona’s status and that of Espanyol.

But Rosell has told fans not to worry about leaving La Liga as the club would wish to remain in the Spanish top flight.

"If one day there was an independent Catalonia, we would still remain in the Spanish league for our games", said Rosell.

"Of that I have no doubt", he added.
