Lille president Michel Seydoux has insisted that he found it simply impossible to keep Eden Hazard at the club for a further season.

Hazard left the 2011 Ligue 1 champions earlier this summer, heading to join Chelsea in a deal which netted Seydoux’s side a substantial €40M.

The Belgian forward has since taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, only increasing the feelings of loss at the Grand Stade Lille.

And there have been mutterings that Seydoux should have done more to keep the Ligue 1 Player of the Year for another season.

The president however insists that would have been mission impossible.

"It was impossible economically to keep Eden Hazard", Seydoux told beinSport, when asked about whether Hazard could still have been at Lille for the 2012/13 season.

Lille were able to use some of the Hazard money to refresh their squad in the summer transfer window though, bringing in former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou and France international attacking midfielder Marvin Martin.

Neither has yet to cause the Lille faithful to forget Hazard however.
