Liverpool have suffered a blow with the news that defender Martin Kelly will be out until next year.

The 22-year-old picked up a knee injury during Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United yesterday and has revealed that he is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

relatedNewsStory Indeed, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will have to make do without the England international until 2013.

Speaking through his Twitter account, Kelly said “It’s not the worst injury I’ve had and I’ll be fighting for my place next year when I’m back fitter and stronger.”

The news only compounds what was a miserable afternoon for the Reds yesterday, with midfielder Jonjo Shelvey being sent off, defender Daniel Agger stretchered off with another knee injury and the game ultimately lost to Manchester United.

Liverpool remain without a win from their first five Premier League games, meaning the pressure is on for a trip to Carrow Road to play Norwich City next weekend.
