Swiss champions FC Basel have parted company with the coach who masterminded their victory over Manchester United in last season’s Champions League.
Heiko Vogel, who led Basel to beat Manchester United 2-1 in the Champions League group stage at St. Jakob Park, qualifying his side for the Round of 16 and in the process dumping the English giants out of the competition, has been shown the door for poor league results.
The St. Jakob Park outfit have lost just one of their 12 games, however, too many draws, six in total, have done for Vogel.
The 36-year-old took over at Basel in October 2011, succeeding Thorsten Fink, initially as caretaker manager before seeing his role made permanent in December.
Vogel’s replacement is Murat Yakin.
The 38-year-old former midfielder previously bossed Luzern.
An ex-Switzerland international, Yakin enjoyed two spells as a player with Basel, the first in 2000 and a second between 2001 and 2006.
