"I have pain in my groin area", Van der Vaart told German daily Bild.

"I hope to play in Sunday’s game, but it will be tight", he added.

Van der Vaart has helped Hamburg to arrest an alarming slide and start to climb the Bundesliga table since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Bundesliga club splashed out €13M on transfer deadline day to re-sign the player they sold to Real Madrid in 2008.

Hamburg have won three of their last four Bundesliga games, with one being a famous 3-2 victory over champions Borussia Dortmund.

Thorsten Fink’s men currently sit eighth in the standings.
