Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that were he able to guide the club to a finish of seventh in the Premier League this season it would rank as a "fantastic" achievement.

Rodgers, whose only Premier League managerial experience was one season in charge of Welsh side Swansea City before he was appointed as successor to the sacked Kenny Dalglish in the summer, currently has Liverpool sitting in 13th spot in the standings, having taken just 12 points from eleven games.

That return leaves Liverpool below the likes of Stoke City, Swansea, Newcastle, Fulham, West Ham, West Brom and Everton, along with major powers Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United; local rivals Everton boast eight more points than the Reds at this stage and sit fourth.

And Rodgers clearly feels the task at Anfield is of such scale that even a slight improvement on last season’s eighth place finish would be a good showing for his first campaign in charge.

"The reality is we’re a long way off in the league", Rodgers was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We finished eighth last year. If we can improve on that, it’ll be fantastic for us.

"That’s the reality of where Liverpool are I’m afraid."

"But our young players will get better and better", he said.

The former Reading boss also vowed to add players to the squad in January, with the promise that if he can bring in fresh faces, draws can be converted into wins.

"We need one or two more players. That [the Chelsea result] is our sixth draw, and a lot of those games we’ve come back into after going behind.

"But we need materials. If we can get one or two in January, we’ll turn draws into wins.

"Those players don’t come cheap, and they’re not too many available in January either."
