Zenit St. Petersburg have entered the race for Genoa defender Andreas Granqvist, according to Calcio Mercato.

The strong Swedish defender has been in impressive form for the Rossoblu since joining in the summer of 2011.

His performances in Serie A have attracted the eyes of English Premier League giants Liverpool, who scouted the 27-year-old last month, when Genoa met Palermo for an Italian top flight clash.

Granqvist quickly admitted to being flattered by interest from Liverpool, though he may now have a difficult decision to make if Zenit join the Reds submitting a proposal to Genoa in January.

With extensive contacts in Italy, Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti is well aware of Granqvist’s qualities and is keen on taking him to Russia.

The defender would also be eligible to compete in the Champions League or Europa League, one of which Zenit could be involved in next year.

Genoa are firmly in the driving seat however.
