Aston Villa winger Brett Holman has been voted 2012 Australian Player of the Year.

The midfielder was named as the award’s recipient at the Australian Football Awards in Sydney earlier today.

The 28-year-old has won 57 caps for Australia since making his debut for the Socceroos in 2006.

This summer he left Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar to sign for English Premier League outfit Aston Villa, joining on a free transfer when his contract in Holland expired.

At international level, Holman scored for Australia at the 2010 World Cup, hitting goals against Ghana and Serbia.

Last year he made his highest number of appearances for the Socceroos to date, winning 15 caps.

Guest of honour at the awards dinner was Sydney FC player Alessandro Del Piero.
