Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has admitted he is dreaming of playing Champions League football.

The Welsh midfielder is getting a taste of Europe this season in the continent’s second tier competition, the Europa League.

But Allen, who signed for Liverpool over the summer from Swansea City, has set his sights higher than the Europa League and wants to help the Reds return to the Champions League.

"Any sort of Premiership [sic] footballer’s dream is to one day play in the Champions League, and it’s no different for me", he told his club’s official site.

"European contest always has great feeling", he continued.

"At Anfield in particular there’s that atmosphere you don’t experience at many other places in the world. Hopefully I’ll get a taste of that one day."

Liverpool have much work to do if they are to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season however.

The Reds currently sit just eleventh and have taken only 15 points from their 12 games so far.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, appointed in the summer, also recently sought to play down expectations at Anfield by insisting that any finish above last season’s eighth place would be "fantastic".

The Reds are in action in the Europa League on Thursday, when they face Swiss side Young Boys.
