Kevin De Bruyne has warned Chelsea that he does not want to return to Stamford Bridge next summer to then sit on the bench for the 2012/13 campaign.

The talented Belgian midfielder is currently on a season-long loan at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, where he has impressed hugely with his performances as an attacking midfield force.

Werder Bremen are delighted to be able to call upon the 21-year-old, a player they admit they tracked for years before Chelsea came onto the scene and took De Bruyne from Belgian side Genk.

As it stands, De Bruyne will head back to Chelsea in the summer, though he has insisted he does not want to just warm the bench, hinting that another loan may be needed if they cannot slot him into the first team.

"As it looks now, I will return to Chelsea this summer, but things can happen quickly, very quickly, in football", he told German daily Bild.

"It is like the table. One week you’re number 12, the next week number six and the following week you are down again.

"If Chelsea will not have me in the summer, I will think about something different."

And warming the bench would be something the Belgian would find hard after a season of regular games in Germany.

"I find it hard to sit on the bench", he admitted.

"I know myself and I cannot stand it.

"I want to play football and if it can’t be at Chelsea, then a level below Chelsea."

De Bruyne has made 15 appearances in the Bundesliga so far this season, scoring four goals and providing four assists.

He is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2017.
