Chelsea have joined Arsenal as fans of Montpellier centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, sending scouts to watch him in action during the club’s weekend Ligue 1 clash against Ajaccio.

According to Canal +, Chelsea talent spotters were in the crowd at the Stade de la Mosson with the express purpose of checking up on Yanga-Mbiwa, ahead of a possible swoop for the France international.

Yanga-Mbiwa was strongly linked with a move away from Montpellier over the summer, with just one year remaining on his contract at the time.

The defender admitted after the transfer window closed that Arsenal and AC Milan had wanted to snap him up, but Montpellier rebuffed each club’s attempts to sign him.

Yanga-Mbiwa has since penned an extended contract with the French champions, but thought to be with the understanding that he can leave next summer for a set fee, if he so wishes.

The defender was in superb form for Rene Girard’s men last season when he helped Montpellier to beat Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title.

Yanga-Mbiwa is a product of Montpellier’s youth academy and has won three caps for France at international level, despite being born in the Central African Republic.
