Inter are bidding to surge to the front of the queue to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Schalke in next month’s transfer window, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

Huntelaar is amongst the most wanted men in European football at present, with his contract at Schalke expiring next summer and, as yet, no extension having been penned by the prolific Dutch goal-getter.

Huntelaar has been strongly linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool and did reveal to Inside Futbol shortly before Euro 2012 that his next adventure after the Bundesliga would be in the English Premier League.

But Inter hope to tempt the 29-year-old back to Italy, where he had a brief spell at the club’s rivals AC Milan in the 2009/10 season.

The Nerazzurri are prepared to offer Schalke €15M to part with Huntelaar in January, a figure which could prove almost impossible for the Ruhr giants to turn down if the Dutchman has not extended his current contract.

The ball will then be in Huntelaar’s court, with the former Real Madrid man previously having insisted he will finish the season in Germany, no matter what he decides to do on the contract front.

Inter are currently mounting a serious title challenge in Serie A and are second, just four points behind league leaders Juventus.

The Nerazzurri appear to believe Huntelaar could make all the difference during the final half of the campaign.
