Spartak Moscow caretaker coach Valery Karpin has admitted that the Russian giants are interested in Lazio striker Mauro Zarate.

The Russian Premier League outfit recently sacked coach Unai Emery, with Karpin coming down from the boardroom to take temporary charge.

Spartak Moscow are determined to recruit a top class coach and rejuvenate the side, with Argentine hitman Zarate a possible option.

The striker is out of favour under coach Vladimir Petkovic at the Stadio Olimpico and is thought to be looking for the exit door next month.

Zarate has played just once in Serie A this season, although he has been handed regular minutes on the pitch in the Europa League.

And he is on Spartak Moscow’s radar.

"We want to introduce a number of changes up front", Karpin told Las Provincas.

"We have watched Zarate and we know that he is currently in his prime", added the Russian.

Zarate is likely to have a number of options if he leaves Rome however, with Spartak Moscow surely needing to make him a tempting offer to head east.
