Sir Alex Ferguson has rubbished reports that Manchester United have agreed to sign striker Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.

It had been reported in some quarters as a done deal, with Lewandowski said to be heading over to Old Trafford during the summer from Jurgen Klopp’s German champions.

But Ferguson has insisted that such reports are completely untrue and he rubbished them in the strongest possible terms.

"It’s nonsense", he told his club’s official site.

"Absolute nonsense."

Lewandowski’s contract at Dortmund expires in 2014 and he has yet to sign a deal to extend that.

Should he not put pen to paper, then the Poland hitman will have only one year remaining on his contract with Dortmund by next summer, placing the Bundesliga club in a potentially sticky situation.

Ferguson though is spoiled for striking choice, with Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez and prospects Federico Macheda and Angelo Henriquez all pushing to be handed playing time.

It does appear the birthday boy, who turns 71 today, has other priorities.
