Chelsea talent spotter Piet de Visser has given his verdict on the club’s young talents on loan at Dutch outfit Vitesse – Patrick van Aanholt, Tomas Kalas and Gael Kakuta.

All three talents are spending time on loan at Vitesse from Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea enjoying a close level of cooperation with the Eredivisie side.

And De Visser is keeping a close watch on their progress, and has delivered different verdicts for each.

The player that has impressed De Visser the most this season is 22-year-old left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The Dutchman was snapped up by Chelsea in 2007, arriving from the youth ranks of PSV Eindhoven, and he has spent time on loan at a number of clubs, including Coventry City, Newcastle, Leicester and Wigan.

Now at Vitesse, Van Aanholt is getting a steady season of first team football under his belt, leaving De Visser more than pleased.

"Under the previous Vitesse coach, John van den Brom last season, Van Aanholt had no chance", De Visser told Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

"Now Patrick has the confidence of Fred Rutten and we will see how quickly he can develop. I said to Patrick recently to focus on football and then there will be quicker progress. How he is and his speed along the flanks, it is fantastic.

"If Patrick continues in this way, he could return to Chelsea faster than people think.

"That his name is mentioned in connection with the Oranje I can understand. Van Aanholt is not worse than Alexander Buttner or Jetro Willems. And he is faster than Erik Pieters.

"But let’s not be too hasty. Allow Patrick first to finish the current season well."

De Visser also looked at defender Tomas Kalas and his Vitesse experience, concluding that, in what is his second season on loan at the Dutch side, he is making very good progress indeed.

"Kalas played last season as a central defender and already enormous progress has been made. At right-back, he is doing that again. His attitude, concentration and drive are pluses. He’s a winner who will bend over backwards to do the maximum possible.

"With Fred Rutten, Kalas has a coach whose specific training will help him know him better. Tomas requires a year, maybe two, but he will eventually come back to the Premier League.

"Chelsea will not bring him back in the winter, perhaps in the summer, it will be around that time that the club will take a look."

Then De Visser turned his attention to Kakuta, a player who the scout admits had large expectations placed upon his shoulders when he joined Chelsea, but who he also feels has suffered from loan spells which were not the most fortunate.

"When Kakuta moved from France to London to join Chelsea, Gael was on record as a huge talent. He is a fantastic footballer with good vision.

"Kakuta has been unlucky a few times with loan spells. During the last three years he has simply had too little football. If it is such a long time between games, it takes a long time before you get into the right rhythm.

"Once Gael started in Arnhem, he had a huge delay, now with Rutten he has the chances and you see him get better week by week. But there is still another step needed."

It remains to be seen when Chelsea will recall Van Aanholt, Kalas and Kakuta, but De Visser appears satisfied with each’s adventure at Vitesse so far.
