Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in out-of-favour Real Madrid left-back-cum-midfielder Fabio Coentrao, according to Spanish daily AS.

Coentrao looks to be heading to the exit door at the Bernabeu sooner rather than later after falling foul of manager Jose Mourinho and also struggling to make the desired impression on the pitch.

The Portugal international turned up more than an hour late for Real Madrid’s first training session of 2013 recently, angering Mourinho, who instantly started disciplinary proceedings; it is understood not to have been the first time Coentrao has arrived late for training.

Meanwhile, Coentrao himself has been unhappy at his lack of playing time this season.

The 24-year-old has appeared just seven times in La Liga so far and has been keen for a meeting with Real Madrid’s directors to discuss his future at the club.

That future could be in England though, and not Spain.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United are looking closely at Coentrao, with a view to snapping him up, more likely in the summer than this month.

However, there could be another potential destination in England for the defender, with Tottenham Hotspur ready to ask for him to form part of any deal which takes Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
