Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stressed that the Gunners will only buy "exceptional" players during the current transfer window.

Wenger has money to spend this month and is keen to bolster his squad for what looks an extremely challenging second half of the season.

The Frenchman has promised fans he will invest, but time is being taken to ensure that only top notch players arrive at the Emirates Stadium.

And Wenger insisted that any new signings must be "exceptional".

"We are still working in the transfer market", admitted Wenger at a press conference, via his club’s feed.

"But we only want exceptional players", he added, further stressing: "In England you are always under pressure to buy."

Arsenal have been linked with a whole host of possible targets, one of the latest being Mainz striker Adam Szalai.

It remains to be seen who the Gunners will swoop for, but Wenger is equally determined to tie up a new contract for Theo Walcott as he is to bring in fresh faces.

On Walcott, Wenger said: "As long as nothing is signed, you are cautious. I’m optimistic we’ll get to a happy conclusion."
