Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that if the Gunners could beat Manchester City later today then it would provide them with a real confidence boost heading into a crucial period of games.

Wenger’s men come face-to-face with the champions at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon and it is just one in a run of four of their next five league games on home turf.

The Frenchman is hoping that his team can seize the initiative, grab three-point hauls, and rise up the standings from their current spot of sixth.

And it could all start with beating Manchester City.

"It would help to improve the confidence of the team – that is very important", Wenger told his club’s official site, expanding on the impact a victory could have.

"You can see that it is important for every team.

"For Chelsea the other night when they started to miss chances [against Swansea], it had an effect on the confidence of the team. That’s why we are in a similar situation to Chelsea. We have had positive results away from home and at home we are now getting back to positive results.

"We beat West Brom and Newcastle in a convincing way, so it is important to continue that."

Arsenal held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season, but will be hopeful of improving upon that today against a Citizens’ team missing a number of key players.
