Greek giants Panathinaikos are holding talks with defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, according to German sports magazine Kicker.

Kyrgiakos arrived in Athens yesterday afternoon with his representatives to meet with Panathinaikos and discuss a move.

The 33-year-old defensive warrior is surplus to requirements at Bundesliga club Wolfsburg and could seal a return to his homeland of Greece if an agreement can be found.

Wolfsburg are not expected to stand in the way of the former Liverpool man, whose contract at the Volkswagen Arena runs until this summer.

Panathinaikos are looking for an experienced defender following Jean-Alain Boumsong’s departure from the club recently.

Kyrgiakos started his career with Panathinaikos before leaving Greece in 2005 to join Scottish giants Rangers.

He did return to his homeland in 2008 with AEK Athens, but then departed again just one year later for Liverpool.
