Newcastle United are on the tail of Standard Liege midfielder William Vainqueur.

The Magpies, who have been extremely active during the winter transfer window, are preparing an offer for the 24-year-old midfielder, according to Belgian daily Derniere Heure.

It is not clear whether Newcastle will look to swoop now or at the end of the season for Vainqueur, who has also been linked with another English side in the shape of Southampton.

The 24-year-old joined Standard Liege in the summer of 2011, moving from Nantes in his native France, where he began his career.

In Belgium, Vainqueur has progressed, cementing a spot in the Standard Liege engine room as a defensively-minded midfielder.

So far this season, the Frenchman has clocked up 22 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League.

Vainqueur would add to an already large French-speaking contingent if he moved to St. James’ Park, with Newcastle having recruited a number of French and French-speaking players over the last 18 months.

The midfielder’s contract at Standard Liege runs until 2016.
