Ligue 1 side Bordeaux tried to pull off a swoop for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent yesterday, but were scuppered by the English side, according to French sports daily L’Equipe.

Bordeaux lost Yoan Gouffran to Newcastle earlier this month and wanted to sign another striker.

And they settled upon Bent as an option, with the 29-year-old having had spells on the sidelines at Villa Park throughout the season.

Bent could have landed in France, but Aston Villa refused to pay part of the striker’s salary for the duration of the loan, meaning he was financially out of reach for Bordeaux.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has made just eleven appearances in the Premier League so far this season, scoring two goals in the process.

A move to Bordeaux would have allowed Bent to relaunch his career in France in much the same manner as Joe Cole did at Lille last season and Joey Barton is now doing with Marseille.

However, with wages significantly lower in France than England, Aston Villa’s refusal to subsidise the switch meant it could not happen.
