Former Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg has backed Arjen Robben to play a key role for the German club in their upcoming Champions League tie against Arsenal.

Robben played only 14 minutes in Bayern Munich’s victory over Mainz at the weekend, being brought on off the bench.

The Dutchman strode directly into the dressing room afterwards and was clearly unhappy with such a fringe role.

Effenberg expects the former Chelsea star to be handed a key job against Arsenal though as Bayern Munich look to dump the Gunners out at the Champions League Round of 16 stage.

"The English week is coming and then Robben will play", Effenberg told Sky 90.

"The situation is very unsatisfactory for him, which makes sense for a superstar like him.

"But it is about the success of the club. Robben would do well to hold off."

Robben has played seven times in the Bundesliga for the Bavarians this season, with the opening part of the Dutchman’s season interrupted by injury.

The 29-year-old is under contract with Bayern Munich until 2015.
