Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez has paid tribute to Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who is retiring at the end of the season.

Carragher announced yesterday that he intends to hang up his boots when the current campaign comes to a close and he will bow out with well over 700 appearances for Liverpool under his belt.

Benitez managed Carragher when he was in charge of Liverpool between 2004 and 2010 and provided the centre-back with the most memorable moment of his career, when the Reds won the Champions League in 2005.

Asked for his thoughts on Carragher retiring, Benitez told a press conference, via his club’s feed, that he felt the 35-year-old had achieved much in the game.

And the current Chelsea manager pointed to praise from Blues defender John Terry.

"To play more than 700 games for any team in football is really a great achievement. To do it for one club is even better", said the Spaniard.

"In 2007, I think John Terry said that Carra was one of the best centre-backs at this time and I think we were really pleased to be able to watch him playing every game."

Carragher will bid to end his Liverpool career on a high by helping the Reds to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season, while the club are also involved in the Europa League.

Strangely, Liverpool are aiming for the same two feats Benitez is targeting at Stamford Bridge, although the Blues are still also in the FA Cup.
