A fascinating duel between three of England’s biggest clubs for Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta could be set to break out during the summer.

Amorebieta has not yet signed a new contract with the Basque club and at present looks to be heading for the exit door at the San Mames.

The Venezuela international is highly rated and his departure could well be set to start a transfer scramble.

While Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund have been linked with the 27-year-old, it is to England where the player could move.

Amorebieta is, according to Sport Mediaset, wanted by Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger may be able to smell a bargain with the experienced defender, while Liverpool need to recruit as many as two more centre-backs during the summer, with Jamie Carragher slated to retire and Sebastian Coates not having yet convinced.

Everton meanwhile have an ageing Sylvain Distin to consider replacing; the Frenchman is 35 years old.

It remains to be seen what Amorebieta’s next move will be and Athletic Bilbao remain keen to convince him to pen a new deal.

However, with the Basque giants enduring a lacklustre campaign so far, the stopper appears to be edging towards experiencing a new adventure away from Spain.
