Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo has questioned Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to sign David Beckham, suggesting it must be more about marketing than football.

Beckham has signed for PSG on a contract until the end of the season and is expected to make his debut for Carlo Ancelotti’s men in next weekend’s Le Clasique against Marseille.

At the Stade Velodrome, PSG’s signing of the 37-year-old has baffled Anigo, from a sporting standpoint.

"I’ll be honest, he was a great player. But why do Paris need Beckham?", he told French radio station RMC.

"I don’t think they do. I don’t see what more he is going to bring them.

"In terms of marketing and image, it is good for Paris.

"In games, he doesn’t add anything more."

The former England captain may have the chance to make Anigo eat his words if he does, as expected, make his PSG bow in the match against Marseille.

With both sides fighting for the Ligue 1 title, it promises to be a crucial clash, which the 37-year-old will try to influence.
