Ajax have rejected an offer from Anzhi Makhachkala for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, according to Voetbal Primeur.
The Dagestan giants are looking for a replacement for Christopher Samba, who headed to join QPR last month, and are frantically trying to buy a quality defender before the Russian transfer window closes at the end of this month.
And Guus Hiddink’s men slapped in a bid for Alderweireld, who has been strongly linked with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle in England, but saw it rejected.
Ajax are not open to selling the 23-year-old now as they cannot buy a replacement and would be left with a hole in their backline for the remainder of the campaign.
Alderweireld has been offered a new contract at Ajax, but has yet to sign, and his current deal expires in the summer of 2014.
Anzhi may return with an increased offer for the Belgium international, but it remains to be seen if Ajax will change their stance.
