Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes will take part in his 1,000th game in the Bundesliga this weekend, when the Bavarians meet Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena.

Heynckes appeared in 369 games as a player in the German top flight, with spells at Borussia Monchengladbach and Hannover 96.

He then moved into the dugout, where he has clocked up 630 games in the Bundesliga, with tomorrow against Werder Bremen set to be his 631st.

Heynckes could surely have managed more had he not left Germany for spells in Spain, with Tenerife, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, and Portugal with Benfica.

Only one man lies ahead of Heynckes in having participated in more Bundesliga games – Otto Rehhagel, who can reflect upon 1033 top flight matches.

Heynckes is set to stand down as Bayern Munich coach at the end of the season, with Pep Guardiola taking over.

It remains to be seen if his Bundesliga love affair will continue elsewhere.
