Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel admits he spent the best years of his career so far at Standard Liege.

The 24-year-old was developed by Standard Liege’s youth academy and progressed through to the club’s first team.

In 2011 he was sold to Portuguese giants Benfica, while last summer he was on the move again, joining Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg.

The midfielder still thinks fondly of his time in Liege though.

"I spent the best years of my career at the Rouches", he told RTBF.

"We did extraordinary things with this club and I hope that the same will happen again in the future.

"It is a little difficult to watch matches from Russia, but I still follow the club’s results."

Witsel remains a popular figure at Standard Liege and certainly appears open to a potential return at some point in the future.
