Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva thinks that manager Brendan Rodgers needs to be given time to realise his vision at the club.

The Reds have been inconsistent this season, crashing out of the FA Cup and League Cup in the early rounds and recently being dumped out of the Europa League by Zenit St. Petersburg.

And in the Premier League the former Watford manager has battled in vain to put together a push for the top four, with Liverpool currently eighth and ten points off a prized Champions League spot.

Should Liverpool not put together a winning run during their last eleven games, the club could be looking at no European football for 2013/14, something which may well affect their chances of keeping hold of world-class striker Luis Suarez.

Lucas however is sure that Rodgers must get the chance to put into practice what he preaches.

"We can see what they have in mind, in terms of taking the club back to the top", the Brazilian explained to the BBC.

"A lot of players came in and a lot of players left, so it’s not easy really", he continued.

"When you see the teams that fight at the top, they have players that play for many years for the club and they know each other.

"I think Brendan is trying to build a competitive squad and a good team for the future. I think it’s going to work and hopefully sooner rather than later."

Liverpool are next in action on Saturday, when they make the short journey to Wigan for a Premier League clash they will be aiming to win.
