Manchester United have not ended their interest in Benfica’s midfield talent Nicolas Gaitan.

The English Premier League leaders sent talent spotters to Portugal to take in Gaitan’s performance for Benfica against Beira-Mar, according to Portuguese daily Record.

The Manchester United representatives saw Jorge Jesus’ men record a 1-0 away win, taking full advantage of FC Porto’s 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon on Saturday.

Now Benfica are two points clear at the top of the Portuguese Superliga.

Manchester United have long been admirers of Gaitan and there was much speculation the 25-year-old would complete a switch to Old Trafford last summer.

Benfica have been desperate to keep hold of the Argentine though and have consistently resisted his departure, rebuffing interest from Anzhi Makhachkala last month.

It remains to be seen whether Sir Alex Ferguson will return for the midfielder in the summer, chequebook in hand, but it is clear he remains on Manchester United’s radar as a potential future purchase.
