Lionel Messi has admitted he would like to wind down his career playing in his native Argentina for Newell’s Old Boys.

The forward has continued to declare his commitment to current club Barcelona and recently signed a new contract. And he does not know when his sojourn in his homeland might come.

But the 25-year-old does want to make sure he can taste Argentine club football, having moved to Barcelona in 2000, after five years spent in the youth ranks at Newell’s Old Boys.

And so the Ballon d’Or holder was deprived of the chance to turn out in senior Argentine football.

"When will it happen? I do not know, but once I return to Argentina, that is my wish", he was quoted as saying by NUsport, about playing back in his homeland.

"I would love to play for that club [Newell’s Old Boys, ed.] because I never managed to do that at the highest level."

It seems certain that when Messi chooses to return to his homeland there will be fierce competition for his signature.

Newell’s Old Boys will hope his heartstrings tug him towards them.
