Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes that he has moved into the age category which means younger players will look up to him and want to learn, but stressed he still feels young at 28 years old.

The Reds, this season, have recorded the youngest average age out of any Premier League club – 27. And Johnson is one of those players whose age has surpassed the average age of the team.

"When you come through, you always look at the older players to learn from them day in, day out and I’m sure the younger players do the same here”, the England right-back told his club’s official site.

"Obviously this day was always going to come but I don’t feel old in my body so it’s good."

Johnson also added that he normally believes 28 or 29 is that time of the career when footballers hit their peak. And he is looking forward to doing just that.

"Everybody is probably different at when they hit their peak but, in general, people have said that around 28 or 29 you hit your peak so we’ll find out.”

The defender had particular praise for his 28-year-old team-mate Stewart Downing, and explained he loves playing with the winger.

"He’s been brilliant. I’ve always enjoyed playing with Stewart – I’ve been a big fan of his for many years. We play well together and cause other teams quite a lot of problems.

"Stewart has been fantastic; his work-rate, the way he gets at players and defences. A lot of the time in football, a lot of hard work can go unnoticed.”

Johnson and his team-mates will be looking forward to tackling Chelsea in a mouthwatering clash this Sunday in the Premier League.
