England football legend Sir Geoff Hurst wants Cardiff City to focus on gradual improvement, after securing a berth for themselves to play in the Premier League next season.

The Welsh side sealed their position in the top tier of English football after clinching promotion with a draw against Charlton. The Championship leaders have earned 84 points from 43 games so far.



“I think you need to improve it a little bit but not go overboard”, the 71-year-old was quoted as saying to

Hurst, who is best remembered for his hat-trick in the 1996 final for England against West Germany, also asked Malky Mackay’s side not to spend to excess on new players.

"I think they’ve got to be careful about spending too much money.

"It’s going to be very difficult, let’s make no bones about it.

"I think one or two clubs have come up in years gone by and spent a fortune and sometimes if you don’t get it right and you go straight down it can put the club in further trouble.”
