Amid the wreckage of Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, Spain custodian Victor Valdes surpassed a record held by Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs, and looks set to have the chance to cement that lead on Wednesday in the return leg.

Valdes’ appearance at the Allianz Arena took the total number of games in the knockout stage in the Champions League era that the Spaniard has played in to 48, one ahead of Giggs, who has featured in 47.

The 31-year-old can now take that total to 49 games on Wednesday, as Barcelona attempt an unlikely comeback against Bayern Munich.

Giggs’ Manchester United crashed out of the competition in controversial fashion at the Round of 16 stage, going out against Real Madrid.

The 39-year-old though should have the opportunity to add to his 47 game tally next season, if the Red Devils can negotiate the group stage.

Valdes though has refused to extend his contract with Barcelona, which expires in 2014, and could leave the club in the summer.

It remains to be seen if the custodian will join a club competing in the Champions League and which can make the knockout phase.
