Fluminense midfielder Deco tested positive for doping, however his spokesman has insisted that his vitamin supplements were contaminated.

The 35-year-old Portuguese was tested after the clash between Fluminense and Boavista last month, and his sample contained traces of furosemide, a banned diuretic which, it was alleged, could be used to mask the use of other substances.

However, the official notice from the Brazilian club stated: “On the news published about the drug test done by midfielder Deco, Fluminense will only take a decision on Friday, 3rd May, when Deco’s “B” sample will be released.”

The former Chelsea midfielder’s spokesman, Fellgher Ahaz, is also ready to prove his client’s innocence on the issue.

"We will defend our image”, Ahaz told Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

“Deco has been taking the extra vitamins for some time and certainly they have been contaminated.”

Deco will miss Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores clash against Emelec on Thursday.
