Mario Gotze’s representatives tried to insert a release clause in his contract with Bayern Munich – but the Bavarians refused.

Bayern Munich recently activated a buy-out clause of €37M in Gotze’s contract with Borussia Dortmund, and the Germany international is due to arrive at the Allianz Arena in the summer.

The buy-out clause, set at an amount well within reach for Bayern Munich, left Dortmund powerless to resist the Bavarians’ approach.

And had Gotze had a similar clause in his new deal at Bayern Munich, the Bavarians might have had their pockets picked in the future, with the 20-year-old coveted by several English clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City.

Bayern Munich slammed the door shut on that possibility in negotiations though, CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed.

"There were attempts made to negotiate to put this [a buy-out clause] in the contract", Rummenigge told German daily Bild.

"But we rejected this", he added.

Indeed, Rummenigge has insisted that no Bayern Munich player has a buy-out clause "because, when you give players the opportunity to leave with clauses in their contract, then you cannot complain if it happens."

Gotze will be in the unusual position of facing Bayern Munich in the Champions League final later this month, when he will aim to help current club Dortmund win Europe’s top prize.
