Roma have lined up the signature of Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, but have put completing the move on ice until it can be signed off by the club’s new coach, according to Sky Italia.

The Giallorossi have been pushing hard for the Belgian centre-back, however Alderweireld has appeared to consistently favour a switch to the English Premier League, following in the footsteps of countryman Jan Vertonghen, who swapped Ajax for Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

And Alderweireld is popular in England, with Liverpool leading the chase for his signature, while Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with bidding for the player.

Roma though are in pole position to scoop up the talented defender, although it is dependent upon the club’s new coach and it is unclear how far along the agreement is.
