Roma Move Into Pole For Liverpool Chased Toby Alderweireld But Wait For New Coach Sign-Off

Tuesday, 14th May, 2013

Roma have lined up the signature of Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, but have put completing the move on ice until it can be signed off by the club’s new coach, according to Sky Italia.

The Giallorossi have been pushing hard for the Belgian centre-back, however Alderweireld has appeared to consistently favour a switch to the English Premier League, following in the footsteps of countryman Jan Vertonghen, who swapped Ajax for Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

And Alderweireld is popular in England, with Liverpool leading the chase for his signature, while Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with bidding for the player.

Roma though are in pole position to scoop up the talented defender, although it is dependent upon the club’s new coach and it is unclear how far along the agreement is.

Alderweireld helped Ajax to retain the Dutch title this season, but has insisted he feels ready to take the next step in his career.

The 24-year-old made 33 appearances for Frank de Boer’s men in the Eredivisie this season.

His contract at the Amsterdam ArenA runs until 2014.
