Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has expressed his regret at not being able to work longer with retiring defender Jamie Carragher, adding that there are no longer many players that can bring what the defender brings to a team.

The long-serving Liverpool centre-back announced his decision to finally hang up his boots roughly three months ago, after playing for the Merseyside giants’ first team for 17 years.

During his stay at Anfield, Carragher has managed to clinch many accolades, getting his hands on the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Champions League.

"It’s one of my biggest regrets", Rodgers told LFC TV in a press conference. "I wanted to work more with him becuase he’s a fantastic player. He’s a real gentleman and you see it in his performance today. He’s a top, top performer.

"But I just knew from his vibe that [his mind] was made up last year and that its his love and devotion to the supporters that willed him on to see out his contract. He’s been absolutely first class", the Northern Irishman added.

Rodgers also admitted that it would be a very tall order to find someone to replace Carragher, saying, "Listen. I know all great players’ times come to an end and they move on, we’ve seen it many times through the years – but someone like Carra, that type of player, there’s no longer many of that.

"It certainly won’t be easy [replacing him]."
