Lyon are desperate to hold onto their star man in Clement Grenier, despite the player not having extended his contract at the club so far.

Grenier’s deal at Lyon is set to expire next year, and while club president Jean-Michel Aulas has been quick to slap a €37m tag on the 22-year-old, keeping him at the Stade Gerland could yet prove tricky.

Premier League giants Arsenal have been keeping a close eye on the attacking midfielder, with scout Giles Grimandi even present at Sunday’s win against Rennes that secured Champions League football for Lyon.

However, Aulas remains hopeful the prospect of European competition will be enough to keep Grenier.

Aulas was quoted by France Football as saying: "I hope [Grenier] will quickly find a solution with the club and he will continue to grow here because the environment is very favourable.

"He told me that his priority is to stay at the club, if we are participating in the Champions League. Now we’ll see what we can do."

Grenier bagged a goal in Sunday night’s victory, bringing his league tally for the season to seven in 28 games, whilst his performances in the early part of this year earned him the praise of coach Remi Garde.

Lyon endured a torrid time in March, when they did not win a single game all month, but a subsequent run of just two league defeats in eight ensured a strong finish to the season.

Garde said: "I am very happy for him. This is a nice boy who is always looking towards the collective.

"He took things in hand with Max (Gonalons) and others during difficult times in March. He was a driving force."
