Anzhi Makhachkala have emerged as surprise contenders in the chase for ex-Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini, according to Russian daily Izvestia.

Pellegrini has been widely tipped to take on the job with Manchester City, having announced his Malaga departure earlier this month, but the former Real Madrid boss has not confirmed any contract at the Etihad Stadium.

And within that uncertainty Anzhi, third-placed in the Russian Premier League, have expressed an interest in the Chilean, who has led Malaga to Europa League football for next season.

His biggest achievement was arguably steering Malaga to the quarter-finals of the Champions League this season, on a limited budget, and only losing out to eventual runners-up Borussia Dortmund.

And the Anzhi leadership have had "preliminary talks" with Pellegrini, this despite their apparent interest in former player-coach Roberto Carlos.

Pellegrini joined Malaga in 2010 after spells at Real Madrid and Villarreal in La Liga.

Anzhi are currently under the command of Guus Hiddink, but the Dutchman has indicated his time with the Russian club could be at an end in the summer.
