Barcelona have turned their attention to Chelsea defender David Luiz after failing to secure the services of Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Thiago Silva owing to his high wage demands, according to Catalan daily Sport.

The 26-year-old Brazilian’s performances in Europe are believed to have attracted the attention of the Catalan giants.

Luiz arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2011 from Benfica, and has helped his side in lifting the Champions League and the Europa League in the 2011/12 season and the 2012/13 season respectively.

The Brazilian has become a regular at Stamford Bridge since his move to Chelsea.

The Spanish champions have also noted Luiz’s fine technique and ability to play as a defensive midfielder; a further string to his bow.

The former Benfica defender made 57 appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring seven times and assisting five times.

Barcelona are now preparing to try and convince Jose Mourinho, who will land at Chelsea this summer, to part with Luiz.

Luiz has a contract at Chelsea until June 2017 and would undoubtedly command a substantial fee if he were sold.

The defender would link up with countrymen Dani Alves, Adriano and Neymar if he moved to the Camp Nou.
